Once you have selected your clash tests and configured your settings, you are ready to run Title Update. Nothing is written into your Navisworks file while titles generate — proposals are staged in the Review Clash Titles window, and only the ones you accept are applied. This article covers starting a run, reviewing and editing the proposed titles, applying them, and the two ways to get your original titles back.
Starting the run
- On the Clash Tests tab, make sure the tests you want are ticked.
- Click Start in the bottom-right of the window.

Two checks can stop you here:
- "Required Property Mappings Missing" — one or more models still have unmapped property fields. Click OK and the Property Mapping window opens at the first unmapped model so you can complete them; the run does not start until every model is mapped.
- "Document Not Saved" — your Navisworks file has never been saved. Save it and try again.
If a previous run for this document was interrupted (for example by a crash), ClashWise also offers "Recover N proposed titles from the interrupted run?" — choose Yes to bring those already-generated titles straight into the review grid instead of paying for them again.
The Review Clash Titles window
When the run starts, the Title Update window closes and the Review Clash Titles window opens. While generating, the header reads "Generating titles — {clash test name}", with a progress bar, a live done / total counter, and a time estimate once a few titles are in. Every clash in scope appears in the grid immediately as a pending row, then fills in as its title is generated.
Also in the header:
- Email me when generation finishes — tick it to get one email with the run's results; useful for large runs you leave in the background.
- Stop — halts generation. Everything generated so far stays in the grid and can still be reviewed and applied.
The review grid
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ✔ | Whether this row will be applied. Successful titles are accepted automatically; untick to reject one. |
| Clash | The clash name — group rows show Group: {name} (count). |
| Clash test | Which test the clash belongs to. |
| Original title | The current title in your model. |
| Proposed title | The generated title — click into the cell to edit it. |
| Status | What happened to this row (see below). |
Status glyphs, with the reason shown alongside and in the tooltip:
✓generated successfully✎generated, then edited by you✗failed (with the reason)⤼skipped — for example "previously updated", "not new", or "groups have no description field"⊘rejected by you…still pending
The filter chips above the grid — All, Failures, Skipped, Edited — narrow the view, and the footer keeps a live tally: N generated · N edited · N failed · N skipped.
Editing, regenerating, rejecting
- Edit a proposed title by typing directly in its cell — the row is marked
✎and stays accepted. - Right-click a row for Regenerate (ask the AI again — this discards your edit after a confirmation), Reject, or Reset edit (restore the AI's original suggestion).
- Retry failed in the footer re-runs generation for every failed row.
- Failed and skipped rows can never be accepted — they are simply not applied.
Seeing a clash in the model
Tick Show clash in model when selected and every row you select is displayed in the Navisworks model view, using the same highlighting style as Clash Detective. Untick it (or close the window) to restore your view.
Applying the titles
When generation finishes, the header changes to "Generation finished — review the titles, then Apply" and the apply button shows a live count: Apply N titles. Click it and the accepted titles (or descriptions/comments, per your Update Option) are written into your clash results in one step — the summary line reports what was applied, and a single Ctrl+Z in Navisworks reverts the entire run.
Renamed groups follow the format {N} Clashes - {title} — for example, 12 Clashes - Ducts crossing structural beams at Level 2. Re-running never stacks count prefixes.
If you unticked Review titles before applying in Settings, the run applies itself automatically when generation finishes — the review window still shows you everything it did.
Closing the window with unapplied titles asks "Discard N proposed titles?" first, so you cannot lose a run by accident.
If you are happy with the results, save your Navisworks file to keep them.
Restoring original titles
Beyond Ctrl+Z, there are two purpose-built ways back:
- Right after a run — once titles are applied, the apply button becomes Restore this run, which puts that run's original titles back.
- Any time later — in the main Title Update window, select the clash tests and click Restore original titles… in the footer. ClashWise keeps a local record of every title it has changed, so this works across sessions and even after several runs — each clash goes back to its title from before ClashWise first renamed it. A confirmation tells you how many clashes will be restored and how many have no stored original.
A restore is itself a single undo step.
Trial accounts
The Title Update window footer shows trial accounts an informational counter of monthly clashes. It does not block anything — runs always complete, and paid subscriptions have no counter at all. Local naming is unlimited.
Tips
- Run a small test first — with review-first staging you can inspect every proposed title before a single one is written.
- Tick Email me when generation finishes for long runs and switch to other work; generation continues in the background.
- Remember that publishing a clash set to the ClashWise web app captures the titles as they are — name your clashes before you publish for the most readable web experience.
